Ebook About Shortly after midnight on 8 December 1941, two divisions of crack troops of the Imperial Japanese Army began a seaborne invasion of southern Thailand and northern Malaya. Their assault developed into a full-blown advance towards Singapore, the main defensive position of the British Empire in the Far East. The defending British, Indian, Australian and Malayan forces were outmanoeuvred on the ground, overwhelmed in the air and scattered on the sea. By the end of January 1942, British Empire forces were driven back onto the island of Singapore Itself, cut off from further outside help. When the Japanese stormed the island with an an-out assault, the defenders were quickly pushed back into a corner from which there was no escape. Singapore’s defenders finally capitulated on 15 February, to prevent the wholesale pillage of the city itself. Their rapid and total defeat was nothing less than military humiliation and political disaster. This is a very well done study of the battle for Malaya and the fall of Singapore that combines both British and Japanese viewpoints. Farrell strikes just the right balance between the "long term" - how Imperial defense in the Far East evolved from 1919 to 1941 - and discussion of British and Japanese preparations for battle in the latter half of 1941. Farrell looks at the air and naval components of the campaign, but of course is primarily focused on the land battle. I think his overall conclusion is exactly correct, which is that the defeat was not just the product of a poorly-trained and poorly-led army, but also of failures at the theater and strategic level. The British should have known Singapore was a lost cause and planned accordingly. My only complaint about the book is the lack of useful maps. Like many people, I am not very familiar with the geography of Malaya, and it was hard to follow the descriptions of the battles just using the small, inadequate maps in this book. I have always wanted to know how such a catastrophic failure happened. Churchill expected the defenders of the ‘fortress’ to fight until the last man was killed, but it didn’t work out that way ...
